DJ AM was found dead of an apparent drug overdose inside his Manhattan apartment Friday, sources said.
The 36-year-old celebrity spinner, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, was discovered surrounded by drug paraphernalia inside his $2 million Tribeca pad about 5:20 p.m., sources said.
Less than a year ago, Goldstein narrowly escaped death when a plane he was riding in skidded off of a South Carolina runway and burst into flames.
Four people were killed. Goldstein, who rose to stardom after he began dating Nicole Richie, suffered severe burns but escaped alive.
Former Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker also survived the crash.
"My deepest condolences for DJ AM," Barker's ex-wife, former Playboy playmate Shanna Moakler wrote in a Twitter feed. "You were a great artist and will be severely missed. My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends."
Goldstein was slated to star in a intervention-style MTV reality show, helping teens break their drug addictions.
Born in Philadelphia, Goldstein battled drug addiction, obesity and depression as a youngster.
He landed in rehab and after beating his drug problem, got gastric bypass surgery.
Goldstein's relationship with Richie was up and down. They were engaged in 2005. But a few months later, the couple broke off the engagement.
Goldstein subsequently dated a number of Hollywood hotties, including Mandy Moore, supermodel Jessica Stam and former Miss USA Tara Conner.
